What is an Achilles Tendon Tear?

The Achilles tendon attaches to the calf muscle to the heel and is especially important because it used when to walk, run, jump, and stand on your toes. A partial or complete tear of the Achilles tendon can be problematic. Tears are commonly caused by overuse, falls from heights, and stepping into holes.

The symptoms of a tear may include the following:

  • Heel pain
  • Calf pain
  • Weakness (inability to push off when walking)

Many patients hear a loud pop or snap when an Achilles tendon tear occurs, but not all of these tears produce a sound. Patients who suspect they have an Achilles tear should seek medical treatment. The Fellowship-Trained and Board-Certified Foot and Ankle Specialists at Olympia Orthopaedic Associates have provided countless patients with Achilles tears with a treatment solution.

How is it treated?

Partial Achilles tendon tears may be treated using nonsurgical treatment options. Patients are usually placed in a cast, splint, or walking boot to give their tendon time to heal. Once healed, Physical Therapy is used to stretch and strengthen the tendon.

Complete Achilles tendon tears usually require surgical intervention. The Foot and Ankle Specialists at Olympia Orthopaedic Associates are experts in performing Achilles tendon repair surgery.  This procedure is used to reconnect the ends of the torn tendon to create a stable tendon. Following surgery, Physical Therapy helps patients stretch their repaired tendon and regain strength.
